Coin Volcano vs Coin Strike: how the two Hold and Win slots compare

On paper, Coin Volcano and Coin Strike: Hold and Win are the same game from two studios: a 3x3 grid, coins that stay put, a three-re-spin counter and four fixed jackpots. Both even list 95.66% as the return of their main build. Play ten minutes of each, though, and they feel nothing alike. This comparison puts the two side by side and shows where the difference comes from, so you can pick the one that fits the way you play.
Two studios, one format
Coin Volcano is the 3 Oaks Gaming title that started the volcano family in August 2023. Coin Volcano 2, 3 Coin Volcanoes and Jungle Volcano all grew from it, and the Coin Volcano slot page lists every symbol it uses. Coin Strike: Hold and Win is Playson’s, released in April 2023, a few months earlier. It started a series of its own, and Coin Strike 2 and Coin Strike XXL are separate games with their own layouts. This page compares the two originals only.

How the bonus plays in Coin Volcano
Everything happens on the same nine positions. Three bonus symbols across the middle row start the Bonus Game, and the Volcano Metre, which fills with symbols on the active line, starts it too once it is full. You get three re-spins, and every new coin puts the counter back to three. Sticky Coins can land during ordinary spins and wait on the reels, worth up to 9x the bet, until the bonus arrives, so a round can open with more than three positions already taken.
Inside the round, Mystery symbols reveal themselves at the end, Coin Collect sweeps up every visible value at once, and filling all nine positions pays the Grand on top of the coins. The Ultra Bonus Game triggers at random and guarantees the Volcano Multiplier feature, which places one to nine multipliers on the grid. Rounds are short and decisive: one or two empty re-spin cycles usually settle them.
How the bonus plays in Coin Strike
Coin Strike splits the work by reel. Coins with values land on the first and third reels, and the Strike symbol on the middle reel is the collector. The bonus needs a Bonus symbol on every reel with Strike on reel two, then opens with three re-spins. Strike symbols hold their positions, any new Bonus symbol resets the counter to three, and when the re-spins run out the values gathered by Strike are paid.
Pile of Gold is the random extra: it can drop additional Bonus and Strike symbols onto the screen and turn a near miss into a full bonus. Between bonuses the five lines keep working, paying three matching symbols from left to right with the Wild filling gaps. The hit frequency is 10.9% of spins, so small wins show up regularly while you wait for the feature.
What you feel between bonuses
This is where the two games part ways. In Coin Volcano the base game has no pay symbols at all: every spin is either a blank or a step towards the bonus, and Sticky Coins and the Volcano Metre are what give the wait its tension. Coin Strike pays line wins along the way, so the balance moves more often and the bonus is the high point of a session rather than its only event.
The headline numbers follow the same logic. Coin Volcano keeps its biggest single prize in the jackpot ladder: its Grand reaches 2,500x in some builds, above Coin Strike’s 1,000x Grand. Coin Strike’s overall ceiling of 5,150x, on the other hand, is about twice Coin Volcano’s 2,551x. Same return, different shape: one game concentrates its value in the bonus round and the Grand, the other spreads it across line wins and a longer top end.
Which one suits you
- You enjoy tension and one clear goal: Coin Volcano. Quiet spins, then a short bonus on nine positions where every coin counts.
- You want action on most screens: Coin Strike, with line wins between bonuses.
- You play for the jackpot ladder: Coin Volcano in a build with the 2,500x Grand; the paytable in your lobby shows which one you have.
- You play for the highest ceiling: Coin Strike and its 5,150x.
- You are new to Hold and Win: either works. Coin Volcano has fewer rules to learn, Coin Strike gives more feedback spin by spin.
The fastest way to choose is the same test on both games. Play the free Coin Volcano demo for a hundred spins and note how often the bonus arrives and how the quiet stretches feel. Then run the same session on Playson’s game: the Coin Strike: Hold and Win guide has its demo, rules and full verdict. Whichever pace you prefer is the right game for you.
In Great Britain both slots follow the same rules: the natural trigger is the way into each bonus, since UKGC-licensed sites carry no Bonus Buy, and every spin, bonus included, sits under the £5 stake cap (£2 at 18-24).
18+. Hold and Win rounds are entertainment, not income: set a budget before the first spin. BeGambleAware.org offers free, confidential support; GAMSTOP covers self-exclusion on all UK-licensed sites.
